John O'Neal Ray

NORTHPORT John O'Neal Ray, age 84, of Northport, died Nov. 30, 2008, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be 2 p.m. today at Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South with Rev. Gary Lee and Rev. Ben West officiating. Interment will follow in Magnolia Chapel Mausoleum with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South directing.

He was born in Fayette County and was the only child of Burl and Maggie Hunnicutt Ray. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for over 30 years. He owned Ray's Plan Service for over 50 years and operated it with his son. Dwayne. He and his wife, Gladys, also owned O'Neal Ray Properties and were part owners of Magnolia Chapel Funeral Homes and Mausoleum. He was a member of Shelton's Chapel Methodist Church and also attended and served as Deacon at Cottondale Christian Church. He served as an officer of the Tuscaloosa Credit Union, the Northport American Legion, and was a faithful member of the Northport Gideons. He was a kind and giving man who loved his family and extended family and was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to all of us. He loved people and touched the lives of so very many with his kind heart. One of his friends commented that "he was a fine Christian man who not only talked the talk, but walked the Christian walk."

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Mildred Hughes Ray.

Survivors include his wife of almost 30 years, Gladys West Ray of Northport; his daughters, Linda R. Brett (John) of Dallas, Texas and Janice R. Wright (Larry) of Duncanville; his sons, Dwight O. Ray of Montgomery and Dwayne B. Ray of Northport; his stepsons, Charles W. West (Debbi) of Tuscaloosa and Dennis M. West (Cheryl) of Keller, Texas; grandchildren, Amy V. Watkins (Jay) of Brent, Emily W. Kalb of Northport, and Bradley M. West of New York City, N.Y.; step-grandchildren, Susan Cook (Chuck) and Kevin Brett (Teressa), both of Newnan, Ga., and Rhonda Doran (Mark) and Brian Wright (Dee), both of Duncanville; great-grandchildren, Lexi Grace Watkins (his "Sweetie Pie") and Jayci and Drake Kalb; and nine step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Joyce Maxey (Luther) of Northport and Essie Mae Hughes of Bogalusa, La.; brothers-in-law, Edward Arnold Hughes of Northport and James E. (Buddy) McGee (Carolyn) of Cottondale; his mother-in-law, Nell (Bobo) McGee of Northport; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Buddy Goodwin, Junior Hughes, Terry Rice, Kevin Brett, Chris McGee, Chris Hinson, Doug Hollyhand, and John Brett.

Honorary pallbearers are employees and owners of Magnolia Chapel Funeral Homes (North and South); Tommy Cobb and all employees, members, and officers of the Tuscaloosa Credit Union; Northport American Legion; Northport and Tuscaloosa Gideons; friends of Shelton's Chapel Methodist Church and Cottondale Christian Church; Susan and Diane Dyer; Jimmy Tittle; Brenda Gibson; the Terry Rice family (Jan, Dawn and Sam); Robert Banks; Nick Johnson; and employees of Jackson Hewitt.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to two causes that meant a great deal to him: the Building Fund at Cottondale Christian Church, P.O. Box 82, Cottondale, AL 35453, and the Northport Gideons, P.O. Box 77, Northport, AL 35476.

Patricia Ann Bennett

BERRY Patricia Ann Bennett, age 52, of Berry, died Nov. 30, 2008, at Fayette Medical Center. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Evergreen City Cemetery with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be Wednesday night from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home
