Merle Craft

Merle Craft, an icon of strength and love, passed away Monday, October 11 in her home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Following her retirement from Kern County General Services in Bakersfield, CA she returned to her home in Berry, AL. Her highest calling was being a mother and friend to anyone who needed her and she was always generous with her time for both people and animals, wanting to take all “strays” home with her. Merle was a member of Berry United Methodist Church as well as very active in Philadelphia Baptist Church, another Church family very dear to her. A woman of deep faith, she lived this faith daily showing all who met her the meaning of unconditional love.

Merle is survived by he beloved husband, Don Craft and their extended family of children: Dianne Baily, Donald Bailey (Anita), Denise Turner (Donnie), Pam Akery (Ricky) of Bakersfield, CA, Andy Craft (Diana), Thomas Craft of Bakersfield, CA, Matt Bond, Connie Bond of Bakersfield, CA, Anthony Ayala of Las Vegas, NV, Joey Goodman, Amanda Goodman, and Charles Goodman of Bakersfield, CA. In their capacity as foster parents for more than 25 years, she and Don provided a home for many others not listed here. She was “Mom” to each and every one.

Merle is preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Mildred Garner, siblings Wayne Garner, Wynell Cook, Wilfred Garner and Shirley Ann Cannon. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. from Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery.
